A good way to judge joint strength is to look at how much material is engaged in the joint and how well it locks the pieces together.

A weaker joint has minimal material contact between pieces and little to no grain interlock. A common example is a butt joint, where two square edges are simply glued or fastened together. This type of joint is often reserved for low-stress areas like back or side panels. A strong joint, by contrast, has a larger contact area and mechanically interlocks the two pieces before glue or fasteners even come into play. Once fastened, that connection becomes extremely difficult to pull apart. Mortise and tenon, lock miter, and dovetail joints are excellent examples. Hardwoods, veneered plywood, and high-grade laminates are typically used for cabinet faces to deliver a beautiful, finished look. MDF still has its place — often on the exterior of painted cabinetry, where its lack of grain pattern creates a smooth, seamless finish — but at this level, it’s never used for structural purposes. The focus shifts from producing the cheapest possible product to building something that lasts.

Material Thickness Matters

The final piece of the puzzle is material thickness. Thicker materials hold up better than thinner ones, adding strength to the panel itself and giving both fasteners and joinery more surface area to grip and lock into.

Many cabinet shops build with ½-inch material, which can create a lasting piece when paired with the right materials and joinery. Go much thinner than that, and the cabinetry becomes far more prone to failure.
